A Visual Diary

My name is Ashley McGarry. I'm a junior Visual Communications major, minoring in graphic design at the University of South Carolina. This blog serves as a visual diary for the Advanced Photo-visual Communications class I will be taking this semester as a way to catalog my inspiration and record my progress.

Mark Weaver is an Atlanta-based designer that a friend showed me a little less than a year ago. He has quickly become an inspiration and a designer that I look up to. I immediately was a fan of his illustration style. His work always manages to appear both vintage and fresh, and he consistently uses texture in a way that is often under-used in graphic design. While he does do a lot of screen prints and artistic pieces, he still maintains an impressive client list, including The Washington Post, WIRED magazine, Men’s Health magazine, The New York Times, Paste magazine, and a handful of other big names.

One of my favorite things about Weaver’s collection of work is his consistency. His designs have such a distinctive style that he has managed to adapt no matter what medium he is working in. That definitely isn’t an easy thing, but it’s a goal that I would very much like to achieve in my own portfolio. Hopefully, I’ll be able to cultivate a more cohesive style in my design work over the next year or two as I wrap up my college career.
